This is a daily account of a retired farmer's life, 1 March 1895 through 1 August 1898. In this diary, Bateman does little more than describe the weather in Boulder. In 1896 he moved from Brainard's Hotel to a boarding house in the Rogers Block of Pearl Street in Boulder.

James M. Bateman was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on 10 July 1830, and died in Boulder, Colorado, on 6 October 1898. He came to Colorado in 1860, and moved to Boulder in 1861. He owned land on the Farmer's Ditch in Boulder; his farm was valued at $7,000 in the 1885 census. In 1890, he sold his farm for $9,500, and lived in Boulder from 1891 until his death in 1898.
