James M. Bateman papers 1873-1898.

This collection contains account books and diaries of a Boulder farmer in the late 1800s. The account books are daily records of various produce and farm stock that James Bateman sold at the Boulder market, as well as farm expenditures. The diaries chronicle the daily life of a farmer/retired person during this period.

James M. Bateman was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on 10 July 1830, and died in Boulder, Colorado, on 6 October 1898. He came to Colorado in 1860, and moved to Boulder in 1861. He owned land on the Farmer's Ditch in Boulder; his farm was valued at $7,000 in the 1885 census. In 1890, he sold his farm for $9,500, and lived in Boulder from 1891 until his death in 1898.
