William Ashley Sunday, Sr., American evangelist, was born November 19, 1862 in Ames, Iowa. After holding various jobs while completing high school, he was recruited to join the Chicago White Stockings, a professional baseball team. Born 12 February 1824 in a log cabin in New York, Chauncey Stokes began helping his father in the carpentry trade at age 16. According to the History of Clear Creek and Boulder Valleys (1880, p. 684), Stokes moved to Colorado in 1871 with the Chicago firm that formed a colony in Longmont, Boulder County.
