Henry T. Cowley came West in 1871 to serve as a Presbyterian missionary to the Nez Perce Indians. He brought his family to the Spokane Falls area in 1874. That same year he built a schoolhouse and began teaching the six children of the twenty families that had settled near the falls. In June 1879 the First Congregational Church was organized in the Cowley home. Cowley became editor of the Spokane Chronicle in 1883. From the guide to the Henry T.
