Ella Higginson Papers, 1880-1940.

Manuscripts, notes, correspondence, memorabilia and scrapbooks by author and poet Ella Higginson. The collection consists primarily of drafts of Higginson's published and unpublished writings, short stories, novels, screenplays and poetry, including manuscripts of "Mariella of Out West," and "Alaska, the Great Country." Correspondence includes letters to and from contemporary writers and publishers. Miscellaneous material includes a volume of poetry by Frank Teck and Higginson's sister Carrie Blake Morgan. Photographs include prints and glass plate negatives.

Author and advocate for women's issues, Higginson was born in Kansas to Charles and Mary Rhodes in 1861. The family moved to Oregon in Higginson's youth, where she married Russell Higginson in 1885. In 1888, the couple moved to Bellingham, Washington, where Higginson's writing career flourished. She was nationally published in journals such as McClure's, Harper's Monthly, and Colliers. Her best known poem, "Four Leaf Clover," propelled her into a weekly column for the Seattle Times entitled: "Cl...
