Dr. Smith earned his doctorate in music from the University of Iowa, served as a bandmaster in the U.S. Army during World War II, and joined the AU music faculty in 1947. He became Chairman of the Music Dept. in 1959, remaining at AU until his retirement in 1982. He wrote 42 musical works, was a music reviewer for the Washington Star, produced radio programs for WAMU-FM, for which he interviewed composers and performers in the U.S. and Europe, and taught a radio course on Evolution of Jazz. ...
