Humphrey Marshall was born in Virginia in 1760. He worked as a surveyor and served in the Virginia Cavalry in the Revolutionary War before moving to Kentucky in 1780. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in Fayette County. Marshall began a stormy and controversial political career as a delegate to the 1787 convention in Danville where he opposed the proposed separation of Kentucky from Virginia.
