James Fitzgerald family correspondence, 1854-1864. [manuscript]

Collections contains a 1854 letter from Andrew O'Kane to Catherine (O'Kane) Fitzgerald (the second wife of James Fitzgerald Sr.); a 1855 letter from the children of Andrew O'Kane to Catherine (O'Kane) Fitzgerald; five letters written by Thomas Fitzgerald (a son of James Sr.) while serving as a Union soldier in Company A 16th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers; and seven letters written to or from James Fitzgerald Jr., a U.S. Marine. Four of the letters by Thomas Fitzgerald were written to his family in Cambridge, MA while his regiment was at Camp Hamilton, Fort Monroe, VA, and one letter was written to his brother James Jr. The letters by Thomas concern his health, activities, and detail camp life including brief description of the punishment for an unidentified soldier caught sleeping on picket duty. The two letters written by James Fitzgerald Jr. to his father were written from the Gosport Navy Yard in Portsmouth, NH and while on the USS Constellation at Naples, Italy. There are three letters by James Fitzgerald Sr. to his son James Jr. and two letters were sent to James Jr. by his brother John. The letters by the Fitzgerald family concern their health, activities of family and friends, enlistment bounties, local economic conditions, and the Confederate ship Alabama. In the letter to James Fitzgerald Jr dated notes that brother Thomas Fitzgerald was wounded during the Battle of Bull Run (Thomas died from this wound). Donor also provided transcriptions and copies of the letters, family group sheets, a copy of a photograph of James Fitzgerald Jr., and copies of documents concerning James Fitzgerald Jr.
