Include correspondence, 1856-1864, scattered accounts, 1848-1871, and land records, chiefly concerning "Berry Hill," 1784-1857, of James Coles Bruce (1806-1865); correspondence, 1853-1905, financial materials, 1854-1895, land and legal records, 1866-1897, and South Boston Improvement Company materials, 1890-1903, of Alexander Bruce (1833-1906); correspondence, 1854-1911, of Mary Evelyn (Anderson) Bruce (1835-1916); and memoir, correspondence, 1874-1953, financial materials, 1937-1950, and genealogical notes of Walter Coles Bruce (1868-1953) of South Boston, Va., and Montgomery, Ala. Also, correspondence, 1897-1947, financial and legal materials, 1907-1948 (in part concerning real estate developer Charles C.Heisen of Chicago, Ill.), and memoranda and commonplace books of Malcolm Graeme Bruce (1869-1948); correspondence, 1900-1952, and other papers, including photographs, of Ellen Douglas (Bruce) Crane (1873-1952) of "Westover," Charles City County, Va.; and miscellaneous papers of other members of the Bruce and related Anderson, Junkin, and Pendleton families. Reflected in the papers are courtship (see correspondence of Alexander Bruce with Mary Evelyn Anderson, and of Malcolm G. Bruce with Myrtle C. Heisen), family relationships (see especially correspondence of Mary E. (Anderson) Bruce with her sisters Frances Margaret Anderson and Anna Aylette (Anderson) Junkin); land speculation and real estate development in the South Boston area of Halifax County (South Boston Improvement Company), and in Rockbridge County, Va. (Glenwood Estate, and Rockbridge Co.), and the especially the close relationship between the three youngest of Alexander Bruce's children -- Walter, Malcolm, and Ellen -- and their love for "Berry Hill" and the heritage it represented.

James Coles Bruce was the son of James Bruce (1763-1837) and his first wife Sally (Coles) Bruce (1770-1806). James C. Bruce married Elizabeth Douglas "Eliza" Wilkins (1809-1850) and had with her eight children, including Alexander Bruce. Alexander Bruce married Mary Evelyn Anderson (1835-1916), daughter of Francis T. Anderson of Lexington, Va.
