The Papers of Dr. Robert L. Hess; 196?-198?.

This collection of materials encompasses Dr. Robert L. Hess's life both before he arrived at Brooklyn College and during the time (1979-1992) that he was president of Brooklyn College until his untimely death. The first grouping of these materials consists of Dr. Hess's professional papers during the time he was affiliated with the University of Illinois at Chicago; there are items such as his general and personal correspondences and other materials relative to the time Dr. Hess was associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois. In addition, this collection contais material such as newsletters and newsclippings regarding the American Associatin of Ethiopian Jews. The followng grouping is comprised of Dr. Hess's years at Brooklyn College and includes a number of publications, speeches given by President Hess, projects, reports, letters of recommendations and assorted news articles. Finally, there is some memorabilia, also from Dr. Hess's years at Brooklyn College, such as large scrapbooks (placed in oversized boxes) with assorted newsclippings. Included in this grouping as well are the photographs as well as numerous awards of appreciation, recognition and dedication that Dr. Hess received during his years at Brooklyn College.

Dr. Robert L. Hess (1932-1992) was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He earned his bachelor's master's and doctorate degrees from Yale University and studied at the University of Rome for two years as a Fulbright scholar. Honorary degrees include those received from the University of New Haven, Hebrew Union-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, and from Spertus College in Chicago.
