Barnes papers, 1878-1945.

Correspondence, manuscripts, diaries, and research materials concerning Arizona pioneers, military history, territorial politics, scientific and artistic fields, livestock and cattle grazing, range management and land conservation, Arizona flora and fauna, origins of geographic names, and Native American groups and cultures. Diaries cover a range of topics, 1878 to 1936, including notes on land erosion, overgrazing of lands, livestock and forestry. A photocopy of a journal kept during his service at Fort Apache documents activities and Indian raids in the late 1870s and early 1880s. Manuscripts include a typescript of his book, Arizona Place Names, his autobiography, cowboy songs, biographical sketches of pioneers, articles about the Battle of Cibecue and Geronimo's surrender, places such as Salome, Ariz. and Tombstone's famous rose bush. Correspondents include Colin Cameron, J.J. Thornber, Earle Forrest, Dwight Heard, and William M. Raine.
