Connecticut League of Nations Association records, 1928-1949.

The League of Nations Association held an annual examination for public high school students beginning in 1927. The examination concerned the problem of organizing the world for peace. Financial prizes were awarded. In Connecticut, beginning with the contest in 1943, students also received a book from the William Watson Memorial Fund. This fund, originally $500, was left by Elizabeth Dana, daughter of Richard Henry Dana, in memory of her grandfather, William Watson, a Hartford, Connecticut merchant. Mr. Watson, who died in 1836, was the first notable worker in Connecticut for the cause of peace between nations. The fund came to an end in 1949. Remaining books were offered to high schools whose students had previously participated in the contest. The papers in this collection, primarily correspondence and exam materials, relate to both the competitive examinations and the William Watson Fund.
