Sylvanus Backus papers, 1788-1836.

Sylvanus Backus was an attorney residing in Pomfret, Connecticut. He served as Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives and was elected to Congress, but died before taking his seat. During the War of 1812 he was an officer with the 1st Regiment Volunteer Brigade under Gen. David Humphreys. Others represented in the collection include Elisha Backus Perkins, John McClellan, and James McClellan. Perkins read law with Backus and partnered with him in 1816. John McClellan served in the Connecticut legislature between 1792 and 1824. James was John McClellan's younger brother. Most of the papers are of a legal nature.
