The Hassler Expedition was composed of a group of scientists invited to accompany the new U.S. Coast Survey Steamer, Hassler, when she sailed from the east coast to her assignment on the coast of California. Louis Agassiz led the team of scientists. Blake studied under Louis Agassiz at the Lawrence Scientific School beginning in 1864 and three years later was hired as a student-assistant at the Museum of Comparative Zoology to help Agassiz organize the Thayer Expedition collections. By 1868 he was working in the MCZ's Conchology Department, drawing anatomical features of freshwater mollusks, and later served as zoological artist on the Hassler Expedition (1871-1872).
