Charles V. Lucier collection, 1936-1953.

This collection contains an extensive group of myths, legends, and ceremonies, particularly of the Eskimos in Buckland (Alaska) gathered by Charles Lucier. Also included are correspondence with Isabelle Bingham, Karluk School teacher, Karluk School records (1939-1946), a 1938 census, information on Native arts, crafts, fishing and hunting, and a large number of 35mm photo slides taken by Lucier during his field work.

Charles V. Lucier was born in Clay Center, Kansas. He came to Alaska in 1942 and studied at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (1943-1945, 1947-1949). Lucier was drafted into military service in 1945 and was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. After his service, he resumed his studies and received a B.A. degree in biology in 1949. Lucier studied Eskimo culture and house ruins at Kotzebue Sound (1950-1951), and did a field study of the culture of the Noatak Eskimos (1952). He taught in schools...
