Phrenological character of George W. Leonard, November 23, 1877 / given by Prof. O.S. Fowler, phrenological author, editor and lecturer.

A manuscript case report for a phrenological reading of the character and mental development of George W. Leonard, conducted at Boston, Mass., 23 November 1877. Desire to know why, sir, is your predominant characteristic and remarkably developed, to which you super-add extraordinary planning powers, great natural sagacity and originality and a power of bringing things to pass by making head work not often equalled [sic]. ..." Bound in illustrated printed wrappers, secured at top by two metal clasps. Inner upper wrapper contains "God creates; man cultivates" text and advertisement for Fowler's journal of life, health, man, and phrenology. Inner and outer lower wrappers contain advertisements for Fowler's published lectures and "consultation and advice by mail".

Orson Squire Fowler, phrenologist, was born in Cohocton, New York, on October 11, 1809, and died in Connecticut on August 18, 1887. In October 1838, he issued in Philadelphia the first number of the AMERICAN PHENOLOGICAL JOURNAL. Among his many volumes on phrenology and kindred subjects are MEMORY AND INTELLECTUAL IMPROVEMENT (1841), PHYSIOLOGY, ANIMAL AND MENTAL (1842), and MATRIMONY, OR PHRENOLOGY APPLIED TO THE SELECTION OF COMPANIONS (1842).
