Beatrice Harraden letters to S. S. McClure and unidentified recipient [manuscript], [1897?] Mar 5 - Dec 9.

Letter #1: [?] Mar 5. Harraden writes to thank McClure for certificate of copyright for her article, although she decided not to have it published in England at the time. Letter #2: [?] May 11. Harraden writes that she wishes McClure would oblige her by telling her whether the Pacific Rural Press in San Francisco is a subscriber to his syndicate, to which she believes Mr. Watts sold the serial use of her little story "The Legend of the Gardener" last January. She writes that the Pacific Rural Press of date May 2nd published this legend without any comments, and she is writing to the editor to make inquiries. She would be much obliged if McClure could give her the information, as she has been "pirated" so much in the States and wishes to protect herself in all quarters now. She includes a picture of herself clipped from some publication. Letter #3: [?] Jul 5. Harraden writes [presumably to McClure] that she is much obliged for the copies of his magazines, as well as for the syndicate service which arrived only a few days ago. She has read through them and finds them very interesting. She is just beginning to write again, and does not have anything ready quite yet, but if he could send her an idea of the subjects he might like to see, she would feel better guided in the matter. At the bottom of the letter is a note apologizing for the delay in her reply. Letter #4: [?] Nov 15. Harraden writes to McClure and says that she has enclosed the corrected manuscript of the article, with two or three little additions so as to make it more complete. She hopes that he will be able to publish it in his January number, but in any case she would be glad to have a proof, which she would return to McClure without delay. Letter #5: [?] Dec 9. Harraden writes to an unidentified publisher to inquire about the safety of a manuscript she has sent him, as he has made no mention of it in his letters and has not responded to any of her previous inquiries in the matter.
