Michigan Central Railroad collection.

This collection consists of materials of the Michigan Central Railroad, and is arranged in two series. The first series, maps showing track changes (1890-1966), includes Ozalid copies of maps showing all tracks laid or removed during the time period cited. Sometimes along with the maps, there are track orders, sheets which show the amount of supplies, men and money needed to undertake the particular job. The maps comprise about 98% of the collection and show tracks and adjacent structures, The second series, record of track changes (1918-66), shows in tabular, statistical fashion all of the track changes made by the Railroad during the time period cited. Information shown includes track order number and date, valuation sheet number, map number, track number, initial of person(s) plotting and inking the data, and remarks.

On March 20, 1837, legislation providing for work to proceed on three railroads and two canals in Michigan became law. One of the railroads -- the central -- was to connect Detroit and St. Joseph through the second tier of counties. Based upon preliminary work already done by the Detroit and St. Joseph Railroad Company (whose rights and properties were purchased by the state), the railroad was able to begin operation (at least as far as Dearborn) by the end of 1837.
