Louisville Legion records, 1841-1889 (bulk 1841-1860).

This group contains records of the Louisville Legion of the Kentucky State Guard (militia). The collection comprises two series, bonds issued for receipt of weapons, and the second containing letters and other papers. The bonds are dated from 1841 to 1860. All but two pertain to the Louisville Legion. The others originated in Marion and Bath counties, for militia units there. Subjects of the letters and papers in the second series include recommendations for discharges and commissions, elections of officers, the transmission of muster rolls, and payment for the soldiers. Several relate to the Legion's participation in the Mexican-American War, noting the gathering of volunteers, acknowledgement of an order by Governor William Owsley sending the unit to the war, a resolution at the outset of the war by the Northern Bank of Kentucky to lend $250,000 to Governor Owsley for initial militia expenses, and a letter from U.S. Secretary of War W.L. Maxey to the governor concerning reimbursement for the unit's travel expenses to New Orleans where it would be incorporated into the regular U.S. Army.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
