Michigan Central Railroad collection.

This collection consists of maps and inventories of the Michigan Central Railroad, and is arranged in three series. The first series, maps of railroad systems (1917-19), contains photocopied maps showing major railroad lines around Michigan into Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The second series, inventory of records at Detroit Station (1986), contains two typed inventories of records found at the Detroit Amtrak Station by the staff of the Bentley and Newberry Libraries. The third series, trackage maps (1912-68), contains maps of proposed and actual railroad sidings. Also includes supportative documents such as letters, budgets, deeds, etc. This series covers various towns in Michigan and maps of Lansing covers various businesses.

On March 20, 1837, legislation providing for work to proceed on three railroads and two canals in Michigan became law. One of the railroads -- the central -- was to connect Detroit and St. Joseph through the second tier of counties. Based upon preliminary work already done by the Detroit and St. Joseph Railroad Company (whose rights and properties were purchased by the state), the railroad was able to begin operation (at least as far as Dearborn) by the end of 1837.
