Papers, 1905.

This collection consists of a typescript of a memoir of Colonel Stephen Jarvis. Accompanying the memoir are notes, comments, genealogical materials, and a brief article on the Loyalists in Canada. Although the notes add a considerable amount of historical information to support the memoir, their pagination shows that only a fraction of the original notes are included with the memoir. The memoir details Jarvis's service in the Queen's Rangers during the Revolutionary War, including descriptions of the hardships of military life. Jarvis also gives accounts of actual combat in which his grandfather was engaged, such as the Battle of Brandywine. The memoir tells of the sale of an African American man and woman to a Staten Island resident, and the subsequent division of the money among all those involved. After the war, Jarvis later moved with his family to Fredericton, New Brunswick, where he became the head of a militia company. They remained there until 1808, when they settled at York to escape hostile neighbors. In 1817, while visiting relatives in New York, he dined with the widow of Alexander Hamilton, and attended some productions featuring the English actress Mrs. Sarah Bartley, of whom he was critical.
