This collection consists of scrapbooks, dating from ca. 1860-1941. The scrapbooks contain printed matter, photographs, and news articles, emphasizing the Satterthwaite family as well as other citizens and significant events that occurred in Tecumseh. The first two books contain information mainly about Joseph Newton Satterthwaite and his family, including obituaries, family photos, poems, as well as birth and marriage announcements. The third book gives a overview of Tecumseh. The fourth book deals with Satterthwaite's business interests. The fifth book consists of "Do you remember?" columns from the Tecumseh Herald. The sixth book looks at Beth Satterthwaite's military service as a nurse in W.W. I. The seventh book offers a general history of the family. The eighth book is a tribute to Henry Ford. Joseph Newton Satterthwaite was born on Nov. 22, 1855, in Raisin Township, to Joseph C. and Elizabeth Comfort Satterthwaite. They moved to Tecumseh, where Joseph Newton remained the rest of his life. After high school, he began working at the Sutton and Swan Hardware Store in 1873. Ten years later, he acquired an interest in the store, and it became known as Swan and Satterthwaite. Industrialist and philanthropist Henry Ford, born July 30, 1863, grew up on a farm in what is now Dearborn, Michigan. Mechanically inclined from an early age, he worked in Detroit machine shops as a young man and became an engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company in 1891. Henry and Clara Jane Bryant, married in 1888, had one child, Edsel, born in 1893.
