The career of Professor Sumner Albert Ives, Sr., the son of the Reverend Sumner Abraham and Alice (Dunbar) Ives, is predominantly reflected through correspondence with his family, in Pinebluff, N.C. During a few early years (1905-1909) he was cashier at the bank of Harrellsville, N.C. He taught science at various institutions in N.C. and Ark., and was professor of biology (1918-1926) and also dean of science (1924-1926) at Howard College, Birmingham, Ala. In 1926, he became head of the biology department and professor of botany at Furman University, Greenville, S.C. He married Gladys Sharp, a native of Harrellsville, N.C., and ther son, Dr. Sumner A. Ives, Jr., became a professor at New York University. This collection also includes biographical information, family photographs, a pamphlet commemorating the history of the Ives Memorial Baptist Church, Pinebluff, N.C., and a bound volume of Ives family genealogy. Also included is a 190-page manuscript diary kept by Rev. Sumner A. Ives, which details church and family life in N.C. from 1909 to 1913 (Addition, 2006-0097). An early letter (July 5, 1835) from Rev. Dwight Ives to his brother Dr. Sumner A. Ives, in Suffield, Conn., describes his travels from Philadelphia to St. Louis through Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville (with a brief comment on slavery), a trip on the Mississippi River and surrounding areas.
