Asa Bement Clarke's narrative details his first thirty years in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Virginia. He begins with his childhood on his father's farm in Conway, Mass., and continues until his purchase of a drug store in Westfield, Mass. Clarke describes important events in his life, including a major accident, the deaths of his father, mother and sister, his admission to the Congregational Church of Conway, education in Mass. and Conn., and teaching career in Conn. and Virg. His eldest child, Virginia M. Clarke Boggs, annotated the narrative in 1936 with further biographical information.

Asa Bement Clarke was born June 8, 1817, in Conway, Mass. He worked as a farmer, teacher, and druggist on the east coast before joining the Hampden Mining Co. expedition to the California gold fields in 1849. Clarke published "Travels in Mexico and California" in 1852, and died December 27, 1882.
