John H. Hanna, a native of Pennsylvania, moved to Kentucky as a boy and lived most of his life in Frankfort. He was appointed clerk for the U.S. Circuit and District Courts and maintained a law practice in Frankfort for many years. He was also president of the Farmers' Bank in the capital city. Hanna amassed a large fortune and became known for his charitable works, including his strong support of the local Episcopal church, whose building he funded. Hanna was married twice.
