Connell papers, 1905-1934.

Manuscript articles, newspaper clippings and scrapbooks about Apaches, Chinese immigration, and early Arizona history. A small scrapbook from John J. Murphy, 1904-1907, includes photographs and news articles documenting his work as Chinese and Immigrant Inspector at Douglas, Ariz. Photographs depict chinese and Syrian individuals. Most of the collection concerns a series of articles which Connell wrote for the "Tucson Citizen" entitled, "The Apache, Past and Present".

John J. Murphy lived in western Virginia at the beginning of the Civil War. His wife was a member of the Tiffany family. Sometime around the first battle of Bull Run Murphy was arrested by the Confederates and was sent to Staunton, Virginia where he was imprisoned. During his imprisonment his wife died as did several of her relatives. After his release in 1862 he left Virginia and eventually settled with his daughter in North Vernon, Indiana.
