Terry Sanford, born James Terry Sanford, August 20, 1917, in Laurinburg, N. C. He was the second son of Cecil L. and Elizabeth Martin Sanford. He received the A.B. degree in 1939 and the J.D. degree in 1946 from the University of North Carolina. He served as an FBI agent, 1941-1942, with the United States Army in Europe during World War II, and as assistant director of the Institute of Government, UNC-Chapel Hill, 1946-1948. Benjamin Franklin Swalin led the North Carolina Symphony for 33 years, from 1939 to 1972, revitalizing and expanding the project that Lamar Stringfield had started under the WPA.
