Service of the USS Half Moon, a seaplane tender in the South Pacific in WW II, is recorded in "History of the USS Half Moon (AVP 26)," in "The Half Moon," in "Summary of actions of the USS Half Moon by Commander J.I. Bandy," and in a debriefing "Interview of Lt. Comdr. David E. Irwin, (A)T, USNR, Radar Officer Aboard USS Half Moon." Squadrons aboard the Half Moon performed rescue operations and were pioneers in changing the primary mission of night flights from reconnaissance to offensive strikes, known as "black catting." The ship survived and witnessed many attacks by Japanese aircraft, including Kamikazee planes. Irwin's interview offers technical detail about the use of radar and radio on the planes and the ship.
