Herman Haupt Chapman was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 8, 1874. He earned a B.S. and a Bachelor of Agriculture degree from the University of Minnesota and received a Master of Forestry degree from Yale University in 1904. Chapman joined the faculty of the Yale Forestry School in 1906 and was named a professor emeritus in 1943.
