George Madison papers, 1780-1816.

This collection contains official letters and other papers of George Madison, later Governor of Kentucky, when he served as Auditor of Public Accounts for the Commonwealth from 1796 to 1816. These papers largely consist of numerous letters, transfers, deeds, and other records filed or sent from citizens to Madison as auditor concerning taxes and land claims. One letter by Madison, also in reference to a land transfer, is included. One small series of letters relates to lands surveyed by Abraham Hite, a land agent. The collection also holds a volume of "Certificates for Military services performed in 1787 & c. under the laws of Virginia. George Madison, Auditor of Public Accounts, Sept. 1, 1800." The book lists date of each entry, along with the names of soldiers and original holders of certificates, tribes of Indians fought, commander of expeditions and the amount paid. An index to the certificates was published in the REGISTER OF THE KENTUCKY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, volume 22 (1924), pp. 2-20.

Madison was born in Augusta County, Virginia in 1763. He began a distinguished military career with service in the American Revolution. After moving to Kentucky, Madison served as an officer during the Indian wars. Governor Isaac Shelby appointed him auditor of public accounts in 1796 and Madison retained the office for more than twenty years.
