Helen Cloud Austin papers, 1944-2008.

Correspondence, newsletters, newsclippings, award programs and certificates, photographs, and a scrapbook document a prominent San Antonio social worker who gained national recognition for her accomplishments in the profession. The papers highlight Austin's professional accomplishments as well as her involvement in the community. The bulk of the materials date from her career at the San Antonio State Hospital from 1965-1987. Files dating after Austin's retirement in 1987 show her continued involvement in, and recognition from professional and community organizations. A retirement scrapbook is particularly helpful with information about the history of the San Antonio State Hospital, and provides photographs of the institution.

Helen Cloud Austin earned local and national recognition for her accomplishments and dedication as a social worker at the San Antonio State Hospital. Austin first applied to the hospital in 1962, but was denied employment due to a "No blacks hired as professional" policy. The racist policy was lifted in 1965 and Austin became the first African-American professional hired at the San Antonio State Hospital, where she worked until her retirement in 1987 as Chief of the Social Service Department.
