[Views of Algeria, Egypt, and Italy]. ca. 1860-79.

The album contains 31 photographs of Algeria, 8 of Egypt and 9 of Italy. Some of the Algerian views are titled "AlgeĢrie pittoresque" and some have captions identifying the subject of the photograph. Most have "C. Portier" printed in the lower right hand corner. The views are mostly of Algiers, including the harbor, the principal mosques, and characteristic streets of the Casbah. There are also a few portraits entitled "Types Algeriennes".

German-born photographer Giorgio Sommer opened his photographic studio in Naples in 1857, and published Naples and Surroundings that same year. While his views and genre scenes catered to the tourist trade, Sommer was also keenly interested in documenting archaeological subjects.
