West Michigan Tourist Association.

This collection consists of thirty-one manuscript boxes and twelve volumes arranged in four series: 1. Manager's subject files, ca. 1926, 1944-1973. Contains many of the records of the Association. 2. Writings of Arthur W. Stace, 1936-1941. The writings available here are clippings and news articles on scenic areas and natural spots within Michigan which he felt were of interest to tourists. 3. Scrapbooks, 1945-46, 1949-54. Contain articles and news clippings from various newspapers and news services about the West Michigan Tourist Association. This includes personnel, members of their families and resort areas within the West Michigan area. 4. Photographs, ca. 1945-1959. The images in these photographs represent various receational and tourist activities, as well as individuals within the Association. The photos and negatives are black and white, ranging in size from 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 to 5 x 7 inches.

Backed by Arthur W. Stace, the Michigan Tourist and Resort Association was organized in April of 1917 with Fred N. Rowe as its first president. Within a few months, it was merged with the West Michigan Development Bureau. In 1956, the western regional organization changed its name to the West Michigan Tourist Association. Stace, Arthur W. (Arthur William), 1875-1950

Stace was born on April 26, 1875, the son of Francis A. and Margaret Mary (McMahon). He married Lillian M. O'Connor on June 1, 1899, with whom he had three children. Stace attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a B.L. He worked as the managing editor of the Grand Rapids Press and the Director of the Utilites Information Bureau of Mich.
