Diary, 1923-1939.

Holographic diary kept by Zane Grey during the height of his career up to the time of his death. Entries contain extensive detail about the natural surroundings near his homes in Florida and California and comment on the vagaries of his career and near financial ruin in the 1930s; mention his family and frequent fishing trips; and include observations of his bouts with depression. Entries from 1923-1924 comprise 56% of the diary. Pages 33-39 contain an unpublished fishing story.

Zane Grey was born Pearl Zane Grey on January 31, 1872 in Zanesville, Ohio to Lewis Grey and Alice Josephine (Zane) Grey. He earned a degree in dentistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1896. From 1898 to 1904 he lived in New York City and had an unsuccessful dentistry practice. At this time he wrote his first book, Betty Zane, about his Ohio ancestors.
