Albert Alexander Murphree, known to friends and colleagues as "Waddy", was the son of University of Florida President A. A. Murphree. He served on the faculty of the Department of English for over four decades. Murphree graduated from Florida in 1929 with an A. B. As a Rhodes scholar, he continued his studies at Oxford University where, in 1933, he received the degree of M.A. Oxon.
