Abner Brownell Wood collection.

Abner Brownell Wood collection.

Personal papers, 1854-1898. After the death of Abner Wood, his heirs retained some of his private documents as keepsakes. This miscellany consists of the items outlined on the location guide. To provide more elaboration where necessary, it should be noted that the "correspondence" mainly deals with property of interest to Mr. Wood or land that he is to reconnoiter. The Livingston County certificates are from the Board of Canvassers testifying that Wood has won election to a public post. Only those maps whose authorship is known are really informative. These two linen sheets show basic physical features, character of the timber and soil, some land ownership, and whether the quarter sections are swamp lands, Soo Canal lands, or sold. The file of military records consists of xerox copies of Abner Wood's pension files in the National Archives. This is supplemented by an original affidavit that was written when seeking some kind of disability payment. The surveyor's references are two publications used by Wood in the field. One is a manual of sines and tangents, while the other is entitled General instructions to his deputies, by the Surveyor General of the United States for the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. The last folder contains copies of the correspondence produced by the donor of these records.
