Papers regarding the admission of women to the University of Virginia [manuscript], 1920, 1961.

Excerpts from the minutes of the Board of Visitors regarding the admission of women to the University of Virginia. Includes the number of 'ayes' and 'nos' on the 1920 vote, with corresponding names of Board members for each vote. The admission of women to the Graduate and Professional Schools of the University passed by a vote of 64 to 4. It was decided that beginning September 1920, "mature and properly qualified women"-- and it is explicitly stated that these women must be white-- may be admitted to the graduate and professional schools. Other requirements include that candidates for admission must be more than 20 years old on the date of registration and must possess a baccalaureate degree (or at least 2 years of college work for certain programs). Several letters between F. L. Berkeley, Jr., and the Assistant Dean of Admissions James E. Kinard concern copies of the original 1920 Board of Visitors minutes regarding the admission of women as "the question of the admission of women to the University's undergraduate schools has once again risen to plague us."
