Unpublished biography of William M. Gwin (482 p.) by Roy Bloss, accompanied by Bloss' research materials. These include letters of research questions to librarians, archivists and others; responses to Bloss; correspondence between William Gwin (grandson of W.M. Gwin) and Bloss; an original letter from Geo. Pen Johnston to Hon. J.W. Denver about politics and the Gwin/Broderick race; items relating to William Gwin's (son of W.M. Gwin) career at West Point; and copies of articles relating to the Gwin family. Also includes the printed speech of William H. Seward on the admission of California (1850).

James W. Denver was born near Winchester, Virginia. He attended public schools and moved to Ohio with his parents in 1830, settling near Wilmington. In 1841 he taught school in Missouri, and in 1844 he graduated from the law school of the University of Cincinnati. He was admitted to the bar and practiced law near Xenia, Ohio.
