David B. Long papers, 1985-1990.

This collection consists of materials documenting Long's activities as a Penn State student from 1985 to 1990. There are class notes, research papers, a thesis in economics, syllabi, and homework assignments from courses in the fields of accounting, anthropology, biological science, communications, economics, forestry, geography, history, math, meteorology, and statistics. In addition to his coursework, there are also materials pertaining to Long's extramural activities. There are "Moshannon News" letters and "Kindred Spirit Journals," both pertaining to outdoor activities. Long also includes a scrapbook containing flyers, programs, posters and other types of ephemera relating to Penn State and State College, Pa. The scrapbook is divided into five sections with one section containing materials related to Penn State's Earth Day activities, another on environmental issues in the area and EcoAction, a third section on miscellaneous student issues, such as student politics, campus speakers, and State College issues on environmental planning and growth; a fourth section on DROP (Don't Ruin Our Park), a local group formed to protect Black Moshannon State Park; and a fifth section documenting college humor and satire in publications. Other materials, such as identification cards, football tickets, football buttons, political buttons, and a Coke bottle featuring the 1986 Penn State National Champion Football Team and Joe Paterno, the Sports Illustrated Man-of-the-Year in 1986.

The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations. David B. Long, of Yardley, Pennsylvania, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics as part of the College of Liberal Arts from Penn State in 1990. While at Penn State, he was involved in many activities, including the Penn State Recycling Committee, Centre County Solid Waste Advisory Committee, Sierra Club-Moshannon Group (chair), Green Tambourine (editor), Penn State Outing Club, and EcoAction (president), the largest and most active student environmental group at Penn State. ...
