The civil war papers of Thomas Parish Murphy, 1861-1874; bulk: 1861-1865.

The collection consists of over 250 typewritten pages, with an index, of Thomas Parish Murphy's 1862 and 1863 diaries. It also contains letters to and from Thomas P. Murphy. The diaries do not give any detailed information on battles in which he participated. They do, however, give detailed information on weather, where the regiment camped, what they ate, and camp gossip. The 1862 diary contains an excellent description of hospital life for a Civil War soldier when Murphy was recovering from a wound he received April 16, 1862. Letters to Murphy from family members and friends provide a view of what it was like on the Vermont home front during the war. There is also a letter from Henry N. Bushnell, commander of Co. H, 6th Vermont, to Thomas P. Murphy describing the battle of Cedar Creek. Also included are transcribed copies of military reports for Co. B, 6th Vermont such as clothing inventories, clothing issues, inventories of government property, general orders, etc. At the end of the collection are five letters from Henry Harrison to his wife Fannie Harrison and one from an unidentified male to Fannie Harrison, all five written between 1848 and 1853. The transcriber, D. D. Murphy, Thomas' son, could find no connection between the Harrison and Murphy families.
