The papers include transcripts of the Barnstable, Mass., town records [including vital records; v.6 has family records], 1640-1866, in 11 volumes plus a 1-volume index copied by Abbie L. Hinckley; Barnstable County, Mass., probate records, 1685-1742, in 7 volumes plus a 1-volume index; and the "Bourne Papers" [John, Melatiah (1722-1778), Richard (1739-1826) and Silvanus (b. 1731) Bourne], a letterbook covering 1748-1790, extracts from the log book of William Parker on board the Derby (ship), 1813-1814, bible record of Silvanus Bourne (1694-1763) in 253 pages. The last few pages contain a listing of many people and how they were sick, likely of smallpox, referring to inoculation, and a copy of a survey of Jonathan Bourne's land at Roxbury, Mass., in 1774. Barnstable, Mass., births and marriages, 1634-1756, is attributed to Gustavus A. Hinckley, though the handwriting is different. There are Old Colony records relating to the town of Barnstable, 1633-1691. The Military and miscellaneous papers volume contain transcripts of the Revolutionary War rolls for Barnstable; town proceedings; expedition to Canada, 1690; General Court [of Plymouth Colony] regarding schools, 1644-1683; Barnstable householders in 1777; miscellaneous records from Plymouth; and "Mashpee lands". One volume is the transcription of the diary of Rev. John Lothrop, of Barnstable, from 1634 to 1653, continued to 1725 with index; one of the Church of Christ, the East Parish of Barnstable; one of deaths, 1725-1859; one of wills prior to 1685; one of marriages, 1638-1874; and four of epitaphs, 1683-1896.
