Consisting chiefly of papers, articles, essays, reports, and other writings by Herd and correspondence re his work as historian, professor, college president, Methodist lay leader, and member of the Lancaster and Greenwood County Historical Societies, Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, Scholarly Activities Committee of the South Carolina Tricentennial Commission, and 1966 World Methodist Conference in London, England. Research correspondence, notes, and reports document Herd's scholarly interest in various historical figures: President Andrew Jackson; physician, naturalist, and scientist John Perkins Barratt (1795-1859); U.S. Representative Lawrence M. Keitt; and Francis Salvador, a delegate from S.C. in the First Provincial Continental Congress who was said to be the first Jew in the western world elected to public office; Salvadore acquired extensive tracts of land in backcountry S.C. during the Colonial era, but lost his life during the American Revolution. Also includes research files on the following topics: Belton, Honea Path, and Williamston, S.C.; and the Mt. Ariel and Cokesbury schools.
