An area between the 1852 Rio Grande channel and the 1907 Rio Grande channel became known as "El Chamizal" and was the subject of ownership disputes between the United States and Mexico. In 1906, the Chamizal Title Company of El Paso, Texas purchased all the underlying Mexican titles and one-third of the overlying titles to the land within El Chamizal.
