Zeitlin was born on Aug. 29, 1899 in Chicago; moved to AZ and attended the Univ. of Arizona; BA (1918), MA (1920), Stanford Univ.; continued study of French in Brussels and at the Sorbonne; accepted teaching position at Univ. of CA Southern Branch in 1925; moved to Berkeley two years later, earning a Ph. D in romance languages with Spanish as a major field from UC Berkeley in 1931; returned to UCLA in the same year as an asst. professor, later becoming chair of the Dept. of Spanish and Italian, ...
