Correspondence, financial records, legal documents, writings and printed materials relating to the Dinsmore family and its descendants and documenting plantation life, farm operations, family life and current events. Most correspondence is between family members. Other topics include slavery prior to the Civil War, the War of 1812, Daniel Webster, Indian treaties, cholera outbreaks, Texas, pioneer life in Minnesota, Theodore Roosevelt's Dakota ranching and early political career, the Mexican Revolution, and World War I and Isabella's participation in the Women's Land Army. Correspondents include members of the Flandrau, Bell, Greenway, Munro Ferguson, and Selmes families, Theodore Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and John C. Greenway. There are diaries and journals present from James Dinsmore, Julia Dinsmore, Isabella Munro Ferguson, and Charles Flandrau. Financial records concern operations of Bayou Black Plantation in Louisiana and Dinsmore Farm in Kentucky and include crop production, slave records, and household accounts. Legal documents include deeds, court records, slave bills of sale, wills and other documents. Various writings and poetry of family members are also present. The John Bell estate includes records for road construction in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, slave cost estimates and Natchez, Miss. death minutes tallying causes of death (1819-1822), and Dr. Bell's patient medical fee journal, 1823-1930.
