John Alfred Brashear papers 1872-1915.

Papers include a detailed autobiographical letter, ten pages in length, written by John Brashear to Mrs. John Patterson and several letters of correspondence surrounding the Historical Society's acquisition of this letter. Also included are clippings from Pittsburgh and Scottish newspapers relating to Dr. Brashear's career and travels and programs from a dinner given in honor of his 75th birthday in 1915.

Dr. Brashear was born in Brownsville, Pa. He studied science and became director of the Allegheny Observatory. He also served as Chancellor for the Western University of Pennsylvania.
