Samuel H. Pirtle collection, 1831-1921.

This collection consists of 62 items dated between 1831-1921, including tax receipts, a letter, cancelled checks, deeds, a will, a commissioner's sale poster, a tornado insurance policy, and an oath of allegience, associated with Samuel H. Pirtle of Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky. Most of the tax receipts were issued by the Marion County sheriff and the Cumberland and Ohio Railroad. Many of the cancelled checks were drawn from the Peoples Deposit Bank in Springfield, Kentucky, and Marion National Bank in Lebanon, Kentucky. The deeds convey land in Marion County. The will, dated 1831, was written by William Phillips of Green County, Kentucky. The oath of allegiance to the United States was signed by Samuel Pirtle of Des Arc, Prairie County, Arkansas, June 6, 1863, while being held at a federal prison in Alton, Illinois. The certificate was also signed by Major Hendrickson, commanding officer of the prison, and was witnessed by Lt. Fisher of the 77th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers. Other names represented in the collection are John S. Dudgeon, William Dudgeon, J.C. Glazebrook, J.H. Kirk, Phoenix Insurance Company, M.W. Crowdus, and William M. Daugherty.

American Temperance Life Insurance Company was chartered in Hartford, Conn., in 1851. In 1861 the name was changed to Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company and later to Phoenix Insurance Company.
