John and Elaine Steinbeck papers, 1937-1996.

Papers of John and Elaine Steinbeck, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s. The bulk of the collection is made up of correspondence from friends and acquaintances prominent in the arts, entertainment industry and government. Correspondents include John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Princess Grace of Monaco, Henry Fonda, Ingrid Bergman, Harry S. Truman, John Kenneth Galbraith, Carl Sandburg, Dag Hammarskjold and many others. Large portions of correspondence include letters from Steinbeck's agents (McIntosh and Otis), Harry Guggenheim, publisher of Newsday, and representatives from the United States Information Agency. Steinbeck's writings include typescripts and clippings of his journalism which was published in newspapers and magazines in numerous countries. The Steinbecks traveled extensively in the 1950s and 1960s through western and eastern Europe, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Ephemera include reviews, photographs, press passes, book covers, programs, permits, etc.
