Kirkland family papers, 1909-1982.

Reminiscences, articles, photographs and family documents relating to William H. Kirkland and his children. His reminiscences, related by him in 1909, concern his arrival in Arizona in 1854, the withdrawal of Mexican soldiers from Arizona after the Gadsden Purchase, an encounter with Apache Indians in 1857, the capture by Indians of Larcena Pennington, the discovery of gold near the Hassayampa, and his lumber business in the Santa Rita Mountains. The period covered by the remininscences is 1850 to 1863. There are also articles and manuscripts about William Kirkland and about his children, Permelia and J.F. Roberts, Elizabeth and Thomas Steele, and Franklin Kirkland. A will and homestead application are present for Thomas Steele, 1888-1893. Photographs are of family members, Sharlot Hall, Jim Roberts and his gun and badge, University of Arizona students, Howard Billman, adobe homes, the "Arizona Range News" building in Willcox, and more. A series of photographs from Cananea, Mexico depict street scenes, a celebration, a funeral procession, and images from the 1906 riots. Several photographs of transportation include a stagecoach at Congress Junction and a gas car that ran from Ajo to Gila Bend using the railroad tracks circa 1915.

He worked in ranching, farming, mining, and the lumber business as well as serving as Justice of the Peace in several communities.
