F. Fortin had a photography studio in Walla Walla, Washington during the late nineteenth century. Located in the southeastern corner of Washington State, the city's population grew following the discovery of gold in 1861. At the time when F. Fortin was working as a photographer, the Walla Walla Valley was a prime producer of agricultural products. Accordingly, Fortin's photographs depict businesses and residences in Walla Walla, buildings on the Whitman College campus, and farms in the surrounding areas of Walla Walla County. The collection also includes a single group portrait of citizens of the town. The majority of the photographs, some of which are dated 1892, appear to belong to a set. Many of the mounts of the prints read on the verso: "F. Fortin's Celebrated Photograph Gallery. Corner East Main and Spokane Streets, two blocks above bridge, opposite Staver and Walker, Walla Walla, Washington."
